Outreach Programs

Gaps often exist between services in place to help others and the actual use of said service. This is where outreach comes in.

What Is Outreach?

Outreach programs come in many forms. There is no universal program that works for all and no simple definition of what an outreach program is. It may be handing out donated winter jackets to an area frequented by the homeless. But it could also be simply bringing an at-risk group – perhaps adolescent teen girls – together to support each other and learn.

The common thread between all of these activities is that they involve some aspect of reaching out to members of the community – though the time devoted, target population, and purpose will vary greatly. Outreach is essentially describing an activity in which the delivery of goods or knowledge is passed from one person to another in order to expand access to healthy services, practice and products.

Why We Need Outreach

There are many people within the community that don’t have the proper access to or knowledge of products or services in the way that they were designed to be. These groups are often referred to as “at-risk” or “under served”. Creating an outreach program that can help to improve the health and well-being of some – or all – members of these groups is the foundation to creating strong, thriving communities for years to come.
